GET THAT 'YES' MOMENT IN THE MOST STUNNING VIEWS
You’re trying to keep your cool, but, you have a gorgeous ring burning a hole in your pocket and they have no idea what’s about to happen. You see, they think you’re just on your way to the next big, adventure filled day.
However, you know that your lives are about to be changed forever. You’ve been planning this for weeks with me — and now is the time.
You’re confident, excited, and this moment feels like an out of body experience. But you know you don’t have to worry because I’m there, in secret, running the show so all you have to do is show up, get down on one knee, and ask your love to spend the rest of their life with you.
Let’s get right down to it — this is the number 1 question I get asked.
And truthfully, there is no right answer.
Iceland is not one landscape ‘‘look’’. It's so many, all changing sometimes almost minute to minute and each one has a completely different feel.
The right spot for you is the one that fits what your partner loves and one that offers the vibe you want — and can fit seamlessly into your Iceland trip plans as to not cause suspicion.
So what did they do when the only Iceland locations they know are not ideal for their proposal? They collaborated with me on choosing the best location through my Little Black Book of Iceland™ — over 1,000 locations I’ve personally scouted.
’’Tall cliffs overlooking a beach with views of the water and black sand.’’
For S&K, he knew for the proposal that she wanted tall cliffs with water views. He also knew that she loves California coast lines.
We chose this volcanic lake with epic views where the coast line was visible and the tall cliffs are abundant.
And for them, there was an added element of the proposal moment needing to be on a specific day when they were en route to meeting up with family members who had just arrived in Iceland.
This was the perfect location for S&K’s 1-hour Iceland proposal.
’’Mountains in the background & water but close to where we’re staying.’’
For C&D, she wanted to propose initially at a super popular spot — Vestrahorn.
However, after starting the planning process, she realised that location didn’t fit the vibes she wanted or their itinerary as it’s about a 7-hour drive from Reykjavík & they weren’t going that far East.
Instead, I first presented a few dupe options that are the same geological type as Vestarhorn mountain, but are closer to the areas they already planned for their trip.
After some location discussion, this completely secluded & private area was chosen for the Iceland proposal. We finished the 2-hour Iceland proposal with a private waterfall picnic.
’’A full-day adventure, but, I want us to be dressed up & to keep it a surprise’’
For A&T, this was more than just a moment he wanted planned. A wanted an entire day filled with adventure with many locations.
A wanted to keep it a total surprise from T, however, he knew she would want to be dressed in fancy clothes for her Iceland proposal images.
So, after we decided on their Iceland proposal adventure day to fit into their Iceland trip itinerary, he knew he wanted to propose mid-adventure, somewhere breathtakingly epic.
We came up with our plan to get T all dressed up without suspecting a thing, I met them at the first location of our 8-hour Iceland proposal adventure, and the rest is history.
’’A private waterfall that we feel like we’re in Middle-earth from Lord of the Rings.’’
For P&J, as a filmmaker he knew he wanted the Iceland proposal to be somewhere that felt like a cinematic fairytale romance.
And, he wanted it to be private as J wouldn’t want a crowd. He for sure knew he wanted a waterfall.
We chose an off-the-beaten-path waterfall that would be private in the summer tourist high-season months.
And, I chose a waterfall that would give the best, dreamy sunlight through the waterfall mist to take the Lord of The Rings Rivendell feels up a notch.
After this private proposal, we continued adventuring to geothermal landscapes for this 3-hour Iceland proposal session to really get more LOTR vibes.
This is the second-most popular question I get.
With Iceland’s seasons being rather unique, let me help you with the best time of year to propose or visit Iceland.
SUMMER ICELAND PROPOSAL
Iceland Summer: June-September
Well, technically speaking, summer in Iceland starts in April with our national holiday: The First Day of Summer, a tongue-in-cheek holiday as the weather feels anything but summer.
The best parts of an Iceland summer proposals are:
- The (usually) warmest weather.
- All areas of Iceland are open.
- The summer ‘‘midnight sun’’ is great to experience, though not necessary for the proposal itself as the photos look like noon.
However, this is the busiest time of the year for tourism, so I don’t suggest planning your proposal anywhere along the South Coast, Golden Circle, or other well-known tourist hotspot.
Propose to your partner in a purple lupine (lúpína) field and feel like you’re an elf in Middle-earth.
Propose to your partner on an all-day, private, remote Highland adventure to get away from the crowds.
Propose to your partner at a secluded waterfall off-the-beaten-path.
AUTUMN ICELAND PROPOSAL
Iceland Autumn: October-November
The autumn in Iceland is the dark horse and my personal favorite. Well, with winter.
This is when the tourist high season starts to taper down, the sunsets come back, and the foliage colours start changing from greens to bright reds, oranges, and yellows.
The best parts of an Iceland autumn proposals are:
- The highest tourist numbers start to go down.
- The sun rises & sets again, so, sunrise proposals are available.
- The landscapes are absolutely stunning with the different colour changes happening all across the country.
However, this is when our ‘‘rainy season’’ starts, but, rain means rainbows.
Propose to your partner in one of our National Parks for the most amazing colors.
Propose to your partner during the sunrise for dreamy light and feel like you’re outside Longbourn estate.
Propose to your partner in epic, secluded areas before they close for the winter.
WINTER ICELAND PROPOSAL
Iceland Winter: November-April
The winter in Iceland is practically a winter wonderland, most of the time.
It can start as early as October, or sometimes November. We really are at mercy of the Norse Gods when the full-blown winter will arrive.
The best parts of Iceland winter proposals are:
- The lowest tourism numbers.
- The snowy landscapes are so whimsical.
- The Northern Lights are out to see on your vacation (not recommended for your proposal itself).
However, the weather can be really harsh so I suggest keeping your proposal in areas less-likely to be closed by a blizzard.
Propose to your partner in Downtown Reykjavík under the holiday lights.
Propose to your partner by a frozen waterfall and feel like you’re in Westeros at the wall.
Propose to your partner in an epic blue Ice Cave.
SPRING ICELAND PROPOSAL
Iceland Spring: April-May
The spring in Iceland is kind of elusive, because it doesn’t really happen. We tend to go from winter, to a few days to weeks of not winter, to our summer season.
The best parts of Iceland Spring proposals are:
- The snow in the low lands starts to melt so the rivers and waterfalls are abundant.
- The leaves start coming back to the trees and the wild flowers start to bloom.
- This is before the high tourist season kicks off.
However, this time of year is unpredictable with the weather. Some years the snow is completely melted, some years it’s still snowing.
Propose to your partner in a forest to feel like Aragorn and Arwen meeting. (Yes, we have forests in Iceland).
Propose to your partner in a lava field with a delicious picnic.
Propose to your partner in a cave shielded from the snow or rain.
1- POP SOME BUBBLY TO CELEBRATE.
2- TAKE A MOMENT TO LOVE ON EACH OTHER.
3- HAVE A PICNIC AT ANOTHER LOCATION.
4- GRAB EACH OTHERS’ BUTTS (ON MORE ADVENTURE).
You can continue the adventure to other locations, continue on your Iceland trip by having your proposal fit snuggly in your travel route, or even plan a really nice dinner that night. Whatever you do, make sure it feels like a celebration.
I love this idea of having a decorated area for the proposal, however, in Iceland it’s really difficult to execute because we have lots of weather and lots of wind. Plus, if you want to keep it a secret right up until the proposal moment, having your partner walk up to a decorated area kinda gives it away.
I often get asked if I can set up rose pedals, candles, or a light-up sign like is seen often online, and here’s the reality — the likelihood of the pedals blowing away, the candles being put out, and a sign with batteries getting wet is almost guaranteed.
This is why I suggest the adventure-focused Iceland proposal, instead, where we can keep it a secret and we let the landscapes create the moment. You can always have a styled-picnic afterward, or a romantic candle-in-a-cave setting post-proposal when we can keep an eye on it.
This also gets asked of me often and the reality of Iceland is that there is no where for me to hide because we don’t have anything to hide behind. Iceland has very little trees and is mostly vast, open areas.
Likewise, the Iceland marriage proposal moment being captured beautifully without missing it needs to be directed by me to make sure the backdrop is the most stunning option, the cameras are focused and ready for the moment, and no one accidentally walks in the frame and ruins it.
But don’t worry, I have everything we need to make this happen without them knowing a thing.
How dreamy, right? I love this visual, but there are so many things that need to happen for this to succeed that after consultation, my previous proposers have all decided on keeping the Northern Lights as a special moment on their trip instead of the proposal moment.
I have an entire guide — A Northern Lights Iceland Proposal Guide — that has the nitty gritty of this. Have a read and see if you and your partner are ready for this and what it really takes to succeed as it’s a low-guarantee activity.
Here are a few to keep you going and planning the best Iceland marriage proposal for you & your partner.
