A Winter Reykjavík City Hall Elopement
A Winter Reykjavík City Hall Elopement
Reykjavík is underrated in my opinion — and perfect for eloping.
When one thinks of Iceland elopements, typically what comes to mind is a backdrop of waterfalls, glaciers, and giant ravines. However, the dark horse of the Iceland elopement is a Reykjavík City Hall elopement and city adventure after. B&L flew halfway across the world from Australia to elope in Reykjavík’s City Hall and I was so incredibly excited to help them pull it all together.
Reykjavík is a small city that packs a punch in all aspects from art, music, food, architecture, and quirkiness so it’s perfect for an Iceland elopement.
B&L wanted something different than the cliché Iceland elopement and fell in love with the different types of building styles here, the lakes, the mountains, the murals, and the coffee. So we designed their day to be exactly that. It was so fun to co-create this experience with B&L because they had a specific vision and vibe they wanted for the day but gave me complete creative control over the design and photography. We had film cameras, polaroids, and digital — a whole arsenal.
After the City Hall ceremony we walked around a route in Downtown that would show them a variety of areas in the quickest amount of time — we only had about 90 minutes until the sun went down because the Iceland winter months are short days and this was right around the winter equinox.
We ended the day having a coffee and it was absolutely perfect.
Reykjavik City Hall Elopement Planning Details:
This Iceland elopement was only 3 hours, which is the minimum needed generally for an elopement like this. Adding more hours or days into your Iceland elopement package would add on some nature locations, too.
This City Hall Iceland Elopement was designed and planned in only a few short weeks.
We started at Hotel Borg in middle of the square.
The couple walked from the hotel to Reykjavík City Hall where the ceremony was held overlooking the famous church, Hallgrímskirkja. After the ceremony we ran into Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir, the Mayor of Reykjavík, and she wanted a photo with the couple which was really cool.
We then went out to the frozen Tjörnin lake where a local reporter stopped them for photos and an interview.
After that we had about an hour to adventure through Reykjavík from the Old Towne area of the original Reykjavík, even some areas that used to be farms, all the way to Harpa Concert Hall, a gorgeous view of Esjan, and then finally ending at the always delicious and perfectly roasted coffee Reykjavík Roasters.
