What to Wear on Your Iceland Winter Elopement

A winter elopement in Iceland is the definition of magical!

I mean, Iceland elopements are incredible at any time of year—but Iceland winter elopements are next-level. As an experienced Iceland elopement photographer, winter elopements are some of my absolute favourites.

First of all, Iceland winters are beautiful. It’s like the whole island transforms into this snowy fantasy world. Picture standing in front of an awe-inspiring frozen waterfall, exploring stunning ice caves, relaxing in a natural thermal pool surrounded by a winter landscape, gazing at the colourful northern lights...sounds like a fairytale, right? Nope, just another mind-blowing winter day in Iceland!

From enjoying Reykjavík winter activities, to exploring breathtaking snowy landscapes off-the-beaten-path, an Iceland winter elopement is definitely a unique and unforgettable way to celebrate your love together.

Plus, the winter season in Iceland is less busy, which means you have more space to take in its beauty all to yourselves!

Is an Iceland winter elopement for you? If you’re thinking about it, then it’s likely! The many benefits of an Iceland winter wedding do come with a few challenges; however, in my opinion, this just makes it all the more memorable, romantic, and one-of-a-kind!

Iceland Winter Weather for Your Elopement

One of the main challenges of an Iceland winter elopement is the weather.

Winter in Iceland typically takes place from November to March, and although it does get chilly, it might not be as cold as you’d think! Depending on where you are on the island, the average winter temperature in Iceland is typically around 0 °C to −10 °C.

However, the weather in Iceland is unpredictable year-round. The wind can pick up at any moment, it might be sunny one minute and hailing the next, and you never know when fog might roll in.

The unpredictability of the weather in Iceland is one of the things that makes it so intensely interesting. Between the changing climate and the eclectic landscape, couples eloping in Iceland can experience so much variety in a single day (which also makes for killer photos!). The only thing that’s for sure, is that it sure as heck won’t be boring!

That being said, it’s also so important to be prepared—especially since most couples choose to incorporate outdoor adventure into their winter Iceland elopement itinerary.

What to Wear on your Winter Elopement in Iceland

One of the most common questions I hear as an Iceland elopement photographer is what to wear on winter elopements. This is key to making the most of your special day!

Here’s a list of clothing items I recommend having on-hand during your winter adventure elopement in Iceland:

Your Elopement Wedding Attire

First of all, I’d like to address another common question that I hear. Can I wear a wedding dress or suit to my winter elopement in Iceland?

The answer is yes! It’s important that you look and feel amazing on your wedding day, even if it’s taking place on the top of a mountain in the middle of an Icelandic winter. So wear the wedding dress, put on the killer suit and tie, have your hair and makeup done—go for it!

Just be mindful when making your attire and beauty decisions. Know that you still need to be able to move comfortably, and that there is a good chance you might get a bit wet or even dirty. Bring whatever you need to touch up your makeup (and go waterproof!), and avoid wearing anything that can’t handle a bit of water, wind, and physical activity. For dresses, I recommend going with more loose and flowy styles, which look amazing in the wind anyway!

Wool Everything

When it comes to staying warm, dry, and comfortable, what wool you wear? 😂 Wool is the best choice! It wicks away moisture and is a great insulator. Seriously—ditch the cotton and go for wool whenever you can.

You’ll hear wool clothing mentioned multiple times in this list!

Wool Thermal Pants

If you’re wearing a dress, I recommend wearing a pair of wool tights underneath. Even if you’re wearing pants, throw on some wool long underwear or a thermal base layer. Your legs will thank you!

Wool Socks

Keeping your feet warm and dry is so important! I also recommend bringing a spare pair, just in case. Some couples like to make the socks a part of their outfit since there are lots of cute styles out there.

Smartwool socks are great, but there are tons of awesome brands out there to choose from.

Wool Gloves

Seeing the ‘wool’ trend yet? Your hands will get chilly fast, so I recommend bringing either a pair of wool gloves, or regular gloves with smartwool glove inserts.

Even if you want to take them off during photos, having them for the times in-between is a game changer. Similar to the socks, some couples choose to bring cute pairs that can be worn in a few photos and kept as useful keepsakes for years to come!

Waterproof Boots (NOT Snow Boots)

Again, protect those footsies! Make sure you bring a pair of waterproof boots, but not necessarily snow boots. Snow boots can be big and clunky. It’s important to bring something that will keep your feet comfortable and dry, but that still looks nice with your outfit.

A Beanie / Toque

Even if your hair is done, bring a beanie just in case. If it’s an especially cold or windy day, a warm hat will help the heat from escaping from the top of your head, which makes a huge difference in your overall body temperature.

I usually suggest having your hair done in a more low-maintenance style—something that can handle a bit of tousling or moisture and still look awesome.

A Winter Parka

A good winter jacket is essential! Bring a winter parka that can fit over your wedding attire, and make sure that it can deal with the wind. Not all winter coats are made for wind, so this detail is super important!

Bonus points if the parka has a hood with faux fur.

A Warm Shawl

A wool or faux fur shawl is a great way to add some warmth, even while taking photos. Choose something stylish that you can throw over your wedding attire so that you can stay warm in case it’s too chilly or windy to go bare-shouldered.

It ends up adding a cozy touch to the photos, which looks lovely with the wintery backdrops!

A Scarf

While you’re packing all your warm clothes, you might as well throw a scarf in there! A scarf is super easy to throw on for some extra warmth between photos, and can also look great with a suit or tux in pictures.

Pocket Hand and Toe Warmers

Oh man...pocket warmers are the best! Throw some in your pockets, boots, gloves, or all three to help keep you toasty no matter what the weather decides to do.

It actually makes a huge difference, so I always recommend bringing these along!

Emergency Winter Elopement Pack

Pack a bag with everything you would need if you ended up stuck in the vehicle for 24 hours in a blizzard, waiting on rescue.

Wait...what?!

Don’t let this one intimidate you. This really should not happen, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Bring some food, lots of water, extra layers, any important medications, and whatever else you think you might need.

I also always bring an emergency kit as well as wool blankets, hypothermia blankets, and other supplies.

A Big Ass Smile!

The most important thing to pack for your winter elopement in Iceland...a big ass smile and an adventurous attitude!

This is one of the reasons why I always recommend hiring a professional Iceland elopement planner and photographer. Working with someone who knows how to plan a safe and memorable elopement itinerary will allow you to relax and truly enjoy your special day.

I always err on the side of caution with the cold, and make sure that my couples are never out in the elements too long. As long as you’re prepared, we can still go for longer hikes, see amazing sights, and get the most breathtaking elopement photos!

As an Iceland adventure elopement photographer and planner, making sure that your elopement is safe, comfortable, and fulfilling is my top priority.
