Where to Elope in Iceland: The Top 5 Most Popular Places

Iceland is a country known for its wonderful, natural landscapes. Iceland is the best place to elope that will make your elopement and elopement photos feel like something out of a fantasy movie.

Iceland should be at the top of your list if you’re into that dreamy vibe. There are hundreds upon hundreds of amazing places in Iceland where you can exchange vows in front of breathtaking scenery, and without all the fuss and stress that often comes with traditional weddings.

Here are the top 5 most popular elopement spots couples ask me about.
(That, I may or may not suggest going to. We will work that out during your elopement planning process!)

Kirkjufell - The Mountain in Game of Thrones for Your Elopement

Kirkjufell is a mountain along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland. Isolated from the other mountains and facing the sea on one side, Kirkjufell can’t be missed and is a famous Iceland landmark. It was made most famous from being used in Game of Thrones.

While you’re there, be sure to check out the Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall. The whole Peninsula will rock your socks.

Búðir Black Church for a Cute Elopement Spot

Speaking of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Búðir Black Church is another stop along the way and lovely place to elope. The Black Church was built in the 1800s and is exactly what it sounds like—a small church in the middle of a field, painted black on the outside but adorably quaint and colorful inside.

Seljalandsfoss- A Waterfall You Can Walk Behind for Your Elopement

Seljalandsfoss is a go-to place to elope in Iceland, and with good reason—I mean, who doesn’t want to elope in front of a giant, powerfully beautiful waterfall?

Located on Iceland’s South Coast, the 65-meter tall falls are spectacular. At certain times of the year, you can walk a path that fully encircles the bottom of the falls (but be prepared to get a little wet!).

Skógafoss- Another Game of Thrones Waterfall

Skogafoss is another crazy awesome waterfall in southern Iceland. These falls are nearly as tall as Seljalandsfoss and are glorious AF! It’s impossible to stand near them and not feel awed by nature and its power. Plus, if you’re a Game of Thrones fan, this is the spot where Daenerys and Jon Snow kiss after flying on dragons together!

There are hiking trails nearby that lead to majestic glaciers and can be followed all the way to Þórsmörk, a beautiful mountain ridge and another must-visit in Iceland.\

Vik and Reynisfjara the ‘Black Sand Beach’ - a Location in Many Movies from Star Wars to Vikings, to Noah.

Also on the south side of the island, Vik and Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach are two more perfect places to elope in Iceland.

Vik is a small, picturesque village surrounded by epic cliffs on one side and the sea on the other. Some of its most famous landmarks are its adorable white church with a red roof, and the nearby Reynisfjara Beach.

You can easily walk to the famous black sand beach from the village of Vik, and from there you can check out the basalt column rock formations and big waves. The sea can be dangerous, so be aware and don’t get too close. That’s just part of the Iceland elopement experience!
