WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION // BROOKLYN WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER | ZAKAS PHOTOGRAPHY
You are engaged, you are planning your wedding, and everything is overwhelming. So, adding on another session just seems like one more thing to add onto the big ole' pile of 'to-do'. But, let me tell you three reasons why, from a modern wedding photographer standpoint, booking an engagement session is the way to go.
One of my favorite things to shoot are engagement sessions. They are so much fun and offer such a wide variety of options. But do you REALLY want to be in front of the camera more times than necessary? Isn't JUST the wedding enough? You (most likely) aren't a professional model and being in front of the camera is awkward, right? It doesn't have to be. In fact, it can be the exact opposite and make you feel LESS awkward in front of the camera come your wedding day. Here are three reasons why you should totally book an engagement session.
1. MORE IMAGES: For starters, you will be able to have some more images to share your love with the world. These images are useful for things beyond sharing on the internet to make all of your friends jealous of how cute you two are. They can be used to create a wedding website, which could save you some headache later down the road. The websites are good for both the modern wedding day to an adventure elopement. It is one spot for your family and guests to see all of the information they will need to know about your wedding so you won't have to answer the same questions a whole lot of times. The images are also good for printed material such as your Save the Dates and invitations, guest album for your guests to leave you love notes in, and images to frame and sprinkle as decorations at your wedding. It is also pretty rad to look back in many years and see the love you two have for each other from before the wedding. Getting married is a life milestone, so seeing yourselves from before that will lend to many smiles later.
2. THEY ARE FUN: No really, they are! Engagement sessions are not 'one size fits all' sessions. We can go wherever your heart desires! Do you want to go somewhere that is meaningful to you both? Do you want to go somewhere like Coney Island where you can play in Lunar Park with me taking photos of it? Do you want to adventure around the wilderness of Iceland and have complete epic landscapes? Do you want to eat pizza and goof around? The possibilities are seriously endless. I have shot them in the rowboats in the middle of the lake in Central Park, while drinking milkshakes in a Shake Shack, just walking around the city finding cute spots to place the couple, a 6 mile hike up and in a mountain, and in geothermal hotspots. They are totally what you make them and what you want. If standing in a pretty park just isn't what makes your heart scream, then that is perfectly fine. I love when my couples want to adventure and let me tag along. We crack jokes and laugh a lot while I stop you in pretty spots and make you kiss a bunch. They are laid back and at some point I just turn into your friend with a camera and you forget that all attention is on you.
3. SO WE CAN GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER: This is actually the most important reason to book an engagement session. They offer a unique opportunity for both you and your photographer to get comfy with one another. Your wedding day could possibly be the first time you have ever been in front of a camera as the main focus. That can make anyone feel a bit self-concious and weird, which, can show in the photos on your wedding day. By having an engagement session beforehand, I get the opportunity to work with my couples one-on-one for an extended period of time. It gives me the chance to show them that 'Hey, look, this is not scary! This is not as bad as you were thinking!'. But not only that, I get to know them on a friend level. I get to see what they like, who they are, and get a better understanding of their love story. Since, after all, I am an artist who's main goal is to document their love story through images. This works both ways, too! The couple gets a chance to really feel out the photographer. They get to see what their personality is like and how they feel around them. Some people shoot with a more hands on approach with posing the couple by physically moving them into position, some photographers (like me) do a less invasive approach to posing couples. Everyone has a preference and it is good to know how your photographer works and what style you prefer. But above all else, it gives you a chance to bring your anxiety levels down about being in front of the lens the day of your wedding. It will make you feel more comfortable and at ease which in turn will give me more opportunity to capture your real emotions and facial expressions because you will not even be thinking about me being there anymore. Your natural selves can shine.
I hope this helped you feel more confident in booking and having an engagement session. I love a good adventure with something unique that is a whole lot of fun.
